During the medieval period in Germany, mining was one of the largest sources of income for many families. German mines were famous for their salt, ore, and other precious resources. However, mining was also extremely dangerous. Over time legends began to develop that share some of the miraculous moments of divine help that many received as they worked in the precarious tunnels of the mines. Angels that guided them, with candles through dark passageways to safety. Many of the miners became wood carvers to bring in additional money for their families. The paired candleholders of the angel and the miner became a traditional symbol to carve for homes all over Germany.

Pair the angel and the miner together to create a four-candle advent as you count down to Christmas.

These beautifully carved and painted candleholders carry on that legacy and come from the Erzgebirge region of Germany.
