German Hand-Carved Nativity
Lotte Sievers grew up in Northern Germany, in an area rich in farmland. Trained as a toymaker in Erzgebirge, Lotte learned a tradition of handcarving figures rather than turning them on a lathe. As she developed her signature style, she chose the nativity scene to be the set by which she would make her name in the carving world. She drew from her own homeland as inspiration: her nativities reflect her native farmland, with roosters, pigs, horses, hedgehogs, and villagers of all sorts coming to greet the Christ-child.
Today, carvers at Lotte Sievers-Hahn carry on the same nativity tradition. Each figure is carved and painted entirely by hand. The artists use limewood for each figure—one of the best woods for carved figures because of its incredible lightness and compact grain. The Lotte Sievers-Hahn nativity is painted in a cheerful palette of oils, and the tiny details captured in wood in each figure inspire wonder and joy.
