Blueberries for Sal

Blueberries for Sal is one of those picture books that feels like a memory, even the first time you read it. Little Sal and her mother head up Blueberry Hill with tin pails in hand, but a mix-up with a baby bear makes for a quiet adventure full of charm. The cozy illustrations and the satisfying “kerplink, kerplank, kerplunk” of berries in a bucket make it a story worth returning to.

Note: McCloskey was the first artist to receive the Caldecott Medal (illustration) twice.  McCloskey’s daughter Sally served as the model for 3-year-old Sal right down to her Mary Jane shoes.
