Connecticut Farm Scene
by Henry Pember Smith
is available for pre-order. It will be shipped as soon as it is in stock.

A stunning calm American pastoral scene. It feels like Europe, but its actually Connecticut. It has an almost palpable sense of tranquility. A small farm house by the edge of a pond, with an abundance of trees at the height of their summer bloom.

This piece was sourced in South Carolina, and it makes you wonder about its journey there. I always love a good art mystery. Gilt carved wooden frame, with absolutely stunning detail, included.

Painted by Henry Pember Smith

Henry Pember Smith (1854-1907) was an American artist known for his contributions to the American Tonalism movement. He was born in Waterford, Connecticut, and showed an early interest and talent in art. Smith's artistic education began in New York City, where he studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League.

Smith's style was heavily influenced by the Tonalist movement, which emerged in the late 19th century as a response to the rapidly industrializing world. Tonalism focused on creating mood and atmosphere through the subtle interplay of light and shadow, using muted and harmonious colors. Smith's works often featured soft, ethereal landscapes, seascapes, and nocturnal scenes that exuded a sense of tranquility and poetic beauty.

He gained recognition for his ability to capture the emotive qualities of the natural world, particularly through his masterful use of color and light. Smith's paintings were imbued with a sense of introspection and a poetic quality, evoking a contemplative mood in the viewer.
