Housewarming Gifts for Friends & Strangers

Housewarming Gifts for Friends & Strangers

It seems everywhere I go lately, homes are being built or remodeled. With all the change and movement, I feel an eagerness to reach out. So with new neighbors and new friends, we want to talk about the art of housewarming. Whether it's an old friend moving into a new apartment, a college freshman moving into the dorms, a new stranger in the neighborhood, or a friend moving into their dream home, we want to offer them goodwill for their new home.

Why We Love the State Fair

Why We Love the State Fair

As we have been learning about harvest festivals around the world, we wanted to feature one of the most iconic American manifestations of the harvest festival: the State Fair. Have you ever been to a State Fair? Several years ago, I introduced my British husband to his very first State Fair, and coming back, one of his comments after our visit was that it was one of the most iconically American things he had ever experienced. So let's talk a bit more about this American icon.

Schultüte: A timely tradition to create potent memories

Schultüte: A timely tradition to create potent memories

One of these traditions I would love to share as the school year looms ahead, is the Schultute tradition from Germany. I love this tradition and have not yet fully developed it. It's a work in progress. Starting way back in the early 1800's the grandparents or godparents in most german speaking areas of Europe would make a beautifully decorated paper cone for a child's first day of school.

Lammas Day: Grains of Celebration

Lammas Day: Grains of Celebration

Grains are among the first crops to be harvested, so we will begin with a few of the traditions of grain harvesting. Wheat and corn are often harvested during the hot days of July. Hay is cut and left drying in bales over the fields. The folk traditions of yore celebrated this day with baking new loafs of bread from the fresh harvest, dancing, feasting, and even bale-jumping sport.

Quarters & Crosses of an Ancient Calendar

Quarters & Crosses of an Ancient Calendar

The ancients were very aware of the sun, stars, and shifts in the earth's movements. Their lives and agrarian livelihoods were highly dependent upon their ability to understand the land, sun, and skies. As such, they created a calendar of sorts to mark each season with action and celebration. Eventually, with the rise of Christendom, these festival days also took on religious meaning.

In the Midst of Midsummer: Traditions and Tales

In the Midst of Midsummer: Traditions and Tales

This year we want to share a bit more of how Midsummer lore and magic fits into the larger framework of interrelated yearly traditions. There is magic in celebrating the passing of seasons and the changes in the world. The origins of Midsummer are ancient, a celebration of light and magic. Some of its earliest known iterations is a pagan celebration of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, filled with light, mischief and magic.

Carl Larsson: Intentional Family Life Sprinkled with the Magic of Color

Carl Larsson: Intentional Family Life Sprinkled with the Magic of Color

When I think of idyllic family life my mind often conjures images of Carl Larsson's home in Sundborn, Sweden. I eagerly recognize that the life lived there was full of ups and downs but through art, craft, traditions and play it seems that Karin and Carl created a setting for their family life which brought them immense joy. Joy depicted in vibrant color and frozen in time for us to observe and learn from.

David Grayson

David Grayson

David Grayson has stirred something deep inside of my heart and soul. As I have pondered upon what has been awakened in me, I have to say that his perspective of just how deep we each want to feel validated and known for who we truly are has caused this stirring. His writing from a first person style has shown his true self and character. All his humanness is brought to light in these wonderful books. But he gives the reader a chance to explore their own humanness as well. The simplistic narratives cause one to stop and ask “Is he describing me?”

Leading Ladies: A Few of My Favorite Literary Heroines

Leading Ladies: A Few of My Favorite Literary Heroines

Books have always been one of my greatest joys and greatest sources of inspiration. Sometimes I read a book and the characters feel like mere acquaintances, but other times the books and their leading ladies who have become treasured friends. I remember the first time I read Anne of Green Gables as a child and felt like Anne and I might have been bosom friends, walking along by the Lake of Shining Waters. She is a bit of a romantic, filled with ideas and dreams, and I was too, and the friendship was easily found in the pages of the book. This year for Mother's Day, we want to give inspiring books and other little bits and bobs that go with them.
