When H.L.A. Culmer settled in Utah, he held a variety of jobs (from accountant to newspaper editor, civic leader, stage manager, and writer) and ultimately settled into the life of business, running his own paint and glass company from 1883 until his death in 1914. As his civic and business life kept him quite busy, much of his painting was done in moments between professional pursuits. Nonetheless, his art was met with widespread acclaim.
