Growing up my mother had one really big stoneware bowl. When the bowl came out it meant one of two things: either she was making her special pasta salad or we were hosting a party. Getting the bowl out always made me feel the eagerness for the gathering it would bring. Since getting married a few years ago, I have been looking for my own unique stoneware bowl for pasta salad and parties and I finally found it.
I first became aware of this traditional pottery from Poland a few years ago. The richness of the colors against the creamy background. We have brought in several pieces of this Polish pottery. This type of pottery has been made in certain regions of Poland since the Middle Ages. Traditionally they used potatoes to stamp the designs on before firing the stoneware twice, making it extremely durable.
