In 1890, as the Salt Lake temple was nearing completion, the Church sent a small group of promising artists to study in Paris, so they could return and paint the temple’s murals. John Hafen was not only among this group of “French Art Missionaries,” he was the one who petitioned the First Presidency to sponsor them. Hafen had to return a year early due to family financial hardships, but because of his early return was one of the first to start work on the Salt Lake temple murals, playing a crucial role in the initial sketching.
