George M. Ottinger
Sawmill - Head of Cottonwood Canyon
Oil on canvas, 13.25" x 11.25" framed
George M. Ottinger’s artistic legacy largely favors Romantic Realism, the influence of which can be seen in the art of those he tutored. Though he didn’t make much in the way of monetary gain through his art, his career helped springboard many other Utah painters. He taught hundreds of young artists at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah), encouraged J.T. Harwood and Edwin Evans to go to Paris to study art, and otherwise established a strong foundation for Utah historical and landscape painting.
