We have the Romans to thank for mosaic artwork, laying their floors and walls with small pieces of stone, tile, and colored pottery that when viewed from a distance created elaborate scenes. They used these same techniques in jewelry.

Also originating in Rome, micromosaic jewelry uses much the same idea, but on an impressively tiny scale! At first glance, the designs seem to be painted on, but a close look reveals tiny enamel and glass tesserae (as many as 1,500-5,000 per square inch) assembled with astonishing artistry into colorful designs. As European travel blossomed during the Victorian era, women brought micromosaic jewelry back from their Italian travels.

This brooch featured colorful flowers and corner swirls.

Pin measures 2 x 0.75 in
