On April 9th 1940 Denmark was invaded by Nazi Germany. Just a week later, on the 16th of April1940, Princess Margrethe of Denmark was born. Needless to say she was born amidst the turmoil of the century.
To celebrate the birth of this princess of light and hope, jewelers in Denmark produced daisy jewelry. 'Marguerit’ is the Danish for daisy, so this made a nice play on her name. Daisy jewelry was produced for every occasion and type including brooches, pendants, bracelets, earrings and necklaces, all in gold-washed sterling silver and white enamel. It became immediately popular for several reasons: as a nod to the newborn princess, respect for the monarchy, but also and perhaps more importantly, as a small symbol of resistance against unwelcome invaders.
