Paintings from the first half of J.T. Harwood’s career (pre-1910) represent the Academic Realism he studied in Paris, a style very similar to 17th-century Dutch Realism. This style of painting values precise, tight brushwork and rich earthy tones. The dark hues and detailed realism of his early paintings sharply contrast the airy colors and looser Impressionistic strokes of paintings from the latter half of his career.
