Cottonwoods, Salt Lake Valley (View from the artist’s backyard)

By the time Henry Lavender Adolphus Culmer began painting, he had already seen much of the world. Born in Kent England (1854), he met Mormon missionaries and immigrated to Utah as a new convert in 1868. Once he began painting, his excursions led him to the Grand Canyon, Alaska, and the wild of Southern Utah where he was the first artist to paint the Natural Bridges. Each of his paintings sing of his great affection for the natural world.
