In 1879, George M. Ottinger went with Charles R. Savage to study art in Europe as a special art missionary. Much of Ottinger’s artwork reflects his studies there; largely characterized as a Romantic Realist, he depicts nature scenes from western landscapes with accuracy but also with an eye towards aesthetic beauty. He later brought these painting skills to work in murals in the St. George, Logan, and Manti temples.
