This Danish seaside scene is lovely with its water reflections and mischievous children playing in the shallow water.
Several years ago, we were on a buying trip in Denmark and stumbled across this beautiful painting by Otto Haslund of these three young boys playing in the shallows. One holds a lovely wooden boat while the other prepares to pull it by a string. In an age of imagination, these boys have the freedom to explore the world, experiment, and even get a little muddy. It's what childhood should be.
Otto Haslund, at this point in his career in 1886, was famed for his part in the Danish Realism movement. He was famed for his children's portraiture, but often the children were portrayed in more formal settings. This piece is unique with its commitment to playfulness and nature.
